At this time, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the northern Gulf of Mexico has not impacted the distant beach of Captiva Island, "Only sun tan oil has been found on our beach." There are no advisories for swimming or fishing in the Gulf of Mexico off Lee County, and it is safe to purchase commercial seafood at local restaurants and grocery stores. J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island is reporting, "There are currently no impacts to our refuge waters. The beaches are clean and open." An ocean current model produced by the federally funded National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) suggests drifting oil could reach mid-Atlantic beaches and even the British Isles, while still not reaching Captiva.
Of course, we want our rental guests to be confident about their vacation plans. That's why we offer our own Oil-free Beach Guarantee, independent of trip cancellation insurance. Our rental guests will receive a proportionate refund (unused occupancy cost = rent, taxes, and reservation fees) in the event that the Captiva Island beaches are closed by officials during your stay
